Maualuga meeting with NFL today

Yes it is Super Bowl week but linebacker Rey Maualuga is meeting with the league today after his arrest last Friday and pleading guilty on Tuesday to drunken driving charges.

Kenton County Chief Prosecutor Charles Vaughn said on Tuesday that he thought Maualuga was meeting with the league this week.

Since it is an alcohol-related offense, he is subject to a fine of two game checks up to a maximum of $50,000. He also could be entered into Stage 1 of the league’s substance abuse program.

Due to prior history, it is likely he will go into Stage 1. As a freshman at Southern California in 2005, Maualuga drank too much and got in a fight at a Halloween party and was arrested for misdemeanor battery. The charge was eventually dismissed when he agreed to participate in an arraignment diversion program that included counseling, community service and attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

Entry in that program is confidential. It is only when a player is in Stage 2 or 3 of the program, where he could be suspended for drug- or alcohol-related offenses that it is publicized.

Cincinnati Bengals rookie linebacker Rey Maualuga will meet with NFL officials Wednesday to discuss his recent off-the-field incident, a league source tells ESPN.com.

Maualuga pleaded guilty to a DUI charge Tuesday in northern Kentucky after hitting two parked cars and a parking meter in the early morning of Jan. 29.

In recent years, the NFL has come down hard on players for off-the-field incidents.

According to the source, a final ruling is not expected to come out of Wednesday's meeting, which was described as more of a personal evaluation of Maualuga by the NFL's substance-abuse team. He is now entered in Stage 1 of the league's substance-abuse program.

Maualuga was a second-round pick of the Bengals in 2009 and had a productive rookie season. He started 15 games and recorded 63 tackles, three forced fumbles and a sack.

On Tuesday, Maualuga pleaded guilty to drunken driving in Kenton County, Ky., and received a suspended sentence.

Maualuga was arrested after police said he hit a parking meter and two parked cars. After pleading guilty on the drunken driving charge, he received a suspended seven-day jail sentence, had his driver's license suspended for 90 days and was put on probation for two years.

In a statement released through his agents, Maualuga apologized "for letting everyone down and making a terrible decision to drive under the influence. I wanted to acknowledge fault quickly and accept the consequences for my actions, which are the same that anyone else facing these charges would receive."
